Home Works of America receives One SC Funds for Disaster Repairs

December 12, 2017

Home Works of America announced that it has been awarded a $20,500 grant from the One SC Fund housed at Central Carolina Community Foundation.  This grant will help bring hope and free Disaster-Repairs to (up to) 5 homeowners in Berkeley and Williamsburg counties during early 2018.  Each of these homes will receive free disaster-related home repairs, whether the replacement of roofs, siding or other measures – all conducted by youth and adult volunteers in a spirit of compassionate construction.  Additionally, for these projects, Home Works of America will work to facilitate collaboration with utility providers or other nonprofit partners so as to enable energy efficiency weatherization measures to also be accomplished.

JoAnn Turnquiest, President & CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation comments: “We are honored to support the important work of Home Works through the One SC grant. By continuing the critical work of rebuilding homes across South Carolina, Home Works is providing homes and hope to families across our state.”

Home Works of America

Home Works of America is a 501c3 with a mission to show God’s love through service to others, by repairing the homes of elderly and disadvantaged homeowners, assisting youth in their development and empowering communities to care for their own members. Since 1996, more than 45,000 youth and adult volunteers have repaired more than 2,700 homes for elderly, disabled or veteran homeowners who qualify based on income/ownership guidelines.

A typical homeowner assisted by Home Works of America is a 71-year-old, single African American woman, annually living on $12,000.  Home Works oversees various repair projects, ranging from the replacement of roofs to the construction of ramps, the gutting of bathrooms, the repairing of ceilings and the painting of walls.  In order to complete these projects free of charge to the homeowner, Home Works relies on the generous donations of corporations, churches and foundations, as well as in-kind donations by professionals who offer their services.
