Home Works of America to hire Joe Huggins as next Executive Director

January 23, 2017

The Board of Directors of Home Works of America (HWoA) announced the hire of Joe Huggins to serve as the organization’s next Executive Director.  Huggins will lead a growing team of 7 full time employees who undergird the efforts of thousands of youth and adult volunteers who annually repair the homes of hundreds of low-income homeowners in SC-NC-GA, as well as in Peru and Haiti.

Building on the foundation of twenty years of compassionate construction, Home Works of America has seen rapid evolution in recent years.  Beyond annually providing safety and sanitation repairs for more than 120 elderly/disabled homeowners, in October 2015 HWoA began conducting expansive flood repairs for Midlands-area homes, as well as repairing coastal homes damaged by Hurricanes Matthew (2016).  Additionally, HWoA has enhanced its risk-management protocol to ensure safety on all sites for youth volunteers, begun a service-learning program for at-risk youth, and continued its pilot program with the Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina to provide weatherization for qualifying rural low-income elderly homeowners.

Jim Powell, who has served as the organization’s Executive Director since December 2013, will transition to the role of Director of Development.   “It is a special privilege to have led Home Works of America through a season of growth to the necessary point of dividing the operational-performance and fund-development responsibilities into multiple positions, both previously on the full plate of the Executive Director.  I am thrilled to now serve under the capable leadership of Joe, who will bring the critical skills needed at this stage of the organization’s maturation,” said Powell.   “Joe will bring immediate impact to our committed volunteers and competent staff.  He is well equipped to enable us to conduct more home repairs in more communities, bringing synthesis and guidance with his experience in construction management – all with a spirit of joy and compassion.”

Joe Huggins has over 10 years of corporate project management experience as well as 8 years of military service in the United States Navy. He will be responsible for the overall mission and performance of HWoA.   Huggins holds a Bachelor of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of South Carolina and holds many certifications including Professional Engineer, Certified Construction Manager, CPESCI and South Carolina OSF Inspector. Upon separation from the Navy, he served as the Deputy Resident Officer in Charge of Construction at the Charleston Air Force Base and Naval Weapons Station.  Prior to serving at Home Works of America, Huggins previously served with Southern Management Group and LCK in Columbia, South Carolina.  Huggins is married and has two children, and is a member of First Baptist Church in Columbia SC.

About Home Works of America

Home Works of America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1996.  Our mission is to show God’s love through service to others, by repairing the homes of homeowners in need, assisting youth in their development, and empowering communities to meet the needs of their own members.  Since 1996, more than 40,000 youth and adult volunteers have helped repair 2,600 homes across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.  At every Home Works project, we work to create a context in which youth and adult volunteers intersect poverty-stricken homeowners in a context of mutual transformation.
