Honor, Duty, Respect define The Citadel

June 20, 2011

CHARLESTON, SC 0 June 20, 2011 – The Citadel Board of Visitors voted Saturday to adopt new Core Values as integral components of the institution’s mission and vision statements. The new Core Values—Honor, Duty, Respect—will become a more prominent part of the college’s identity. The board also approved a new four‐year leader development model for the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

Both of the changes were made at the recommendation of Brig. Gen. Sam Hines, provost and chair of The Citadel Experience Integration Team.

“We are pleased with the board’s decision,” said Hines. “Honor—Duty—Respect are the three values that we feel most closely align with The Citadel’s mission to educate and develop principled leaders.”

The Corps of Cadets and The Citadel Graduate College together enroll approximately 3,200 students, about three‐fourths of whom come from South Carolina. The college’s educational programs are based on the teacher‐scholar model, recognizing that excellence in academic programs depends on the quality of the faculty.

The new four‐year leader development model:

4th class       Prepare
3rd class       Serve
2nd class      Lead
1st class       Command

“The new development model is more appropriate for the entire Corps of Cadets and focuses on the development of principled leaders,” said Hines.
