Honoring a Pioneer: Fountain Inn Museum Hosts Dr. Matilda A. Evans Exhibition
April 10, 2026The Fountain Inn Museum has officially opened a new landmark exhibition, “Dr. Matilda A. Evans: The Life of A Trailblazer,” honoring the extraordinary legacy of the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina.
The exhibition, which runs through May 16, 2026, offers residents of the Golden Strip an intimate look at the life of a woman who broke profound racial and gender barriers at the turn of the 20th century.
A Legacy of “Firsts”
Born in Aiken County in 1872, Dr. Evans’ story is one of immense resilience and service. After graduating from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1897, she returned to her home state, where she became a cornerstone of public health.
The exhibition highlights her critical contributions to the Upstate and the broader South Carolina community, including:
-
The Taylor Lane Hospital: The first black-owned hospital in Columbia, which she founded to provide care during an era of strict segregation.
-
Public Health Advocacy: Her pioneering work in establishing the South Carolina Good Health Association and her efforts to provide free medical examinations to Black school children.
-
Service Abroad: Her role as a physician during the Spanish-American War, where she continued to provide medical expertise under challenging conditions.
Connecting Local History to the Present
For Fountain Inn and the surrounding Simpsonville and Mauldin areas, the exhibition serves as a vital reminder of the pioneers who paved the way for modern healthcare in the Palmetto State.
“Dr. Matilda A. Evans was a true pioneer in South Carolina history,” the Museum shared in a statement. “Her life serves as an inspiration for future generations of medical professionals and community leaders alike.”
