HUB-BUB announces 2018/19 Artists-in-Residence

HUB-BUB, a division of Chapman Cultural Center, has announced the two artists chosen for their 2018-19 Artists-in-Residence program. This will be the 10th year for the program that has recruited artists from around the nation to live and work in Spartanburg. The program has seen several shifts through the years but, by its nature, is an ongoing experiment — one that seeks to explore the many complex and necessary roles that artists play in our community.
For the next year, HUB-BUB will host two artists, Marisa Adesman and Ambrin Ling, in a space being called the “Creative Placemaking Studio” at Chapman Cultural Center. Marisa and Ambrin, both trained as painters (but whose work explores elements of sculpture and performance as well) will hold regularly scheduled open studio hours where the public will be invited to come and observe their processes and engage in conversation and discussion about their work.
Eric Kocher, HUB-BUB & Creative Placemaking Director at Chapman Cultural Center said: “Our goal is for the ‘Creative Placemaking Studio’ to be a place where, as a community, we can work together to create a more vibrant and healthy Spartanburg through the arts. The application process attracted 21 artists working all over the country. We were particularly drawn to both Ambrin and Marisa, not only for their technical skill and impressive resumes, but for the important and, at times, challenging content of their work. We hope, through their work, we might find a portrait of our community that we would not otherwise be able or willing to see.”
Marisa Adesman was born and raised on Long Island, New York. She recently graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with her Masters of Fine Arts in Painting. Through her artistic practice, Marisa examines the impact of femininity and modern culture in order to open up a conversation on gender politics with a strong emphasis on awakening the female selfhood. Through painting, video, and performance, she creates visual narratives that disrupt restrictive ideas of gender, social identity, and femininity, and she strives for an elusiveness that defies the social categories that threaten to limit women.
Ambrin Ling received her BA from Carleton College in Minnesota and her Masters of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. As a practitioner in the visual language of stains and traces, Ling uses painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation to explore ideas of absence, home, and belonging. Her work draws from her personal experiences moving across environments and as a mixed-race woman, as well as from her larger social, anthropological, and art historical research.

We have a long time commitment to serving local artists through grants, performances and artist fees; but another aspect of our work includes recruiting artists through a national search to come to Spartanburg to experience our very special cultural community. We are extremely excited to welcome Ambrin and Marisa to Spartanburg. Both of these artists have exceptional portfolios and skills as professional artists. Both women value working with the public in the creative process and will be spending twenty hours a week working with our community. Our vision for the “Creative Placemaking Studio” is to not only provide access to these amazing artists in their creative practice, but to stimulate innovative ideas for expanding our community vibrancy and creative opportunities for all of our residents and visitors.”
About the HUB BUB Artist-in-Residence Program
HUB-BUB is an artist-in-residence program hosted by the Chapman Cultural Center in Spartanburg, SC designed to provide time and space for emerging artists to live free and create. Two residencies will be offered to studio artists for 11-months, from September 2018 – July 2019, during which the artists will receive a monthly stipend, studio space, and housing with utilities paid. During their residency, artists are expected to hold regularly scheduled open studio hours for 15 hours each week during which they will be available to discuss their work and their process with the public.
