July 7, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – The Columbia Police Department, Florence Police Department, Lexington County Sheriff’s Office, Lexington Police Department, and the Richland County Sheriff’s Department are joining the International Conference of Police Chaplains to host and sponsor the 41st Annual International Conference of Police Chaplains Training Seminar (ATS).

The five-day event officially begins Monday, July 14, 2014 and welcomes more than 340 law enforcement chaplains from South Carolina, across the country, and globe.

Of special note, an Opening Session is planned for 1:00 p.m. on July 14th at the Columbia Marriott featuring Administrator John Pistole – Transportation Security Administration.

On Wednesday, July 16th at 7:00 p.m., a Memorial Service will be held at First Baptist Church’s Boyce Chapel located at 1306 Hampton Street, followed by the closing session on Friday morning.

This year’s theme is called ‘Equipping Chaplains to Serve.’  Forty (40) training sessions will allow chaplains to hone their skills in pastoral care ministry.

Past conferences have been held in Alabama, California, Tennessee, Texas, Michigan, Washington State, and Jamaica.

The group’s slogan is ‘Developing Professional Chaplains through Dynamic Education and Support.’

According to the Training programs enhance a chaplain’s efficiency in meeting and dealing with people in crisis. Many clergy are either required or strongly encouraged by their ecclesiastical organizations to participate regularly in continuing education programs.

The Annual Training Seminar (ATS) offered by ICPC specifically is intended to prepare law enforcement chaplains for their specialized work.

The required 12 core courses for credentialing at the Basic level of law enforcement chaplaincy will be offered, as well as an Advanced Track and Enrichment Courses. ICPC Regions also offer course work to satisfy many of the basic credentialing requirements.

ICPC maintains a registry of all continuing education work completed by members. Each of the workshops or advanced track programs at the national ATS will earn each participant continuing education credits.
