Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission announces new executive director

The Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) has announced the promotion of Mark A. Smyers to the position of executive director. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Elizabeth B. Taylor on June 30, 2017. “The Commission is excited about having Mark at the helm and we look forward to his leadership of the Agency,” said John Sowards, Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission Chairman.
Smyers joined the staff at ICRC as the Saluda Shoals Park Director in August 2015. While serving in this position, he oversaw the Park’s operations and vast programming. While under his tenure, the Commission completed the Saluda Shoals Park expansion, including the new east entrance, six multi-purpose athletic fields, ten tennis courts, and a lower boat ramp. Smyers also led the Park’s recovery efforts from the October 2015 flood. Before joining ICRC, he worked at FMWR (Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation) at Fort Jackson, where he served as the Outdoor Recreation Director for four years. Smyers oversaw Fort Jackson’s outdoor recreational programs, park lands, equipment check out facility, hunting and fishing, 32 RV/camping sites, 60 suite hotel, 14 cottages/cabins, and multiple special events for Soldiers and Families. Prior to that, Smyers served as the Director of Recreation for Spartanburg County Parks where he was responsible for special events, 50+ programming, youth development, outdoor recreation, and four recreation centers.
“It’s a tremendous honor to serve our community in this capacity. This is a special agency, in a special community, and we will continue to provide great quality programs and facilities for the people here,” said Smyers. “I am looking forward to being a part of the great things that lay ahead.”
Smyers, who grew up in Groton NY, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Parks, Recreation and Tourism from Clemson University and his Master of Science in Sports Management from the American Public University. He assumed his role as ICRC’s Director July 1, 2017.
