Jackson Creek Elementary School wins Outstanding Project Award

Learning By Design magazine has awarded Jackson Creek Elementary School a 2018 Outstanding Project Award. The PreK-5 school was constructed as a design-build project with LS3P and Thompson Turner Construction for Richland School District Two and accommodates roughly 750 students in 126,000 square feet. The project is featured in Learning By Design’s fall 2018 issue.
The flexible, open 21st century learning environment groups grade levels into “neighborhoods” which share five to six classrooms, a collaboration room for small-group projects, and a central learning hub. The exterior design was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s work, with playful architectural elements such stylized colored glass accents on the main entry tower.
LS3P Vice President, Principal, and Architect Mary Beth Sims Branham, AIA, sees the design as a community anchor. “We wanted the school to integrate into its environment, both in terms of the natural setting near the Gills Creek Watershed area and the ‘international corridor’ along Decker Boulevard,” she explains. “Our exterior palette uses earth tones to harmonize with the landscape, but also incorporates ribbons of red, blue, green, and yellow glass to reflect the flags of the nations represented in our neighborhood.”
The school opened to students in the fall of 2017.
