Jumpstart your summer with a stress-free mind: Summer 2014 class series at Upstream in Five Points

May 14, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC – June 16-August 18, 2014

With Columbia’s longer-than-average winter finally coming to a close, the bright, sunny days of another Famously Hot summer are on the horizon. The clearer skies can do wonders for our moods and attitudes – but with large family vacations to plan and the kids out of school, even summertime can take its toll on our constantly busy minds and bodies.

The owners of Upstream Mindfulness Center want you to get the most out of your summer season. Hilda White, M.D. and Jemme Stewart, longtime mental health experts, will hold their consecutive 8-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course Mondays, June 16-August 18, 2014, aimed to mend and redirect the way our minds and bodies respond to stress. Helping us cope with physical issues such as chronic pain and fatigue as well as anxiety, the benefits of MBSR are both far-reaching and well-documented.

While many people associate mindfulness with sharpening attention and living “in the moment,” this focused meditation method can change the way we relate to others – especially our loved ones. Research shows that mindfulness has the capacity to make us more compassionate and empathetic.

“How we treat ourselves is highly correlated with how we treat others,” says Shauna Shapiro, Ph.D., an associate professor of counseling psychology at Santa Clara University. “Mindfulness guards against the feelings of stress and busyness that make us focus more on ourselves and less on the needs of other people.”

During a time when you might be spending extended hours with in-laws or entertaining guests, learning to be more understanding can mean the difference between enjoying your beach days and missing the experience entirely.

Celebrate the warmer weather and kick start your summer by registering for Upstream’s Summer 2014 weekly class series. Jemme and Hilda’s backgrounds in psychiatry and mental health nursing, respectively, allow these highly trained specialists to take a well-rounded approach in improving our interpersonal lives through mindfulness.
