March 6, 2018

Justice 360, a non-profit organization dedicated to reforming policies and proceedings in capital punishment cases, has recently named Columbia, SC based attorney Elizabeth Franklin-Best as their new Chairperson of the Board of Directors.

Justice 360 first began its mission in 1989 as a Death Penalty Resource Center, part of a federal government funded network of advocacy groups in states that use the death penalty. Over the past several decades, the organization has evolved to become an active and self-supporting non-profit advocacy group whose mission is to promote fairness, reliability and transparency in the criminal justice system for individuals facing the death penalty and juveniles facing lengthy sentences in South Carolina. The organization changed its name to Justice 360 in 2016 to reflect its transformative work to ensure justice for every person at every stage of the law.

“Justice 360 exists to advance equality in all capital cases,” said Elizabeth Franklin-Best. “I am so pleased to represent a passionate group of attorneys, legal scholars and defense advocates who work diligently to promote justice for all-justice that is fair, unbiased and corrective when necessary.”

Franklin-Best said that Justice 360 not only offers resources and support for lawyers tasked with representing capital and juvenile defendants but that is also represents individual clients. In addition, the organization also advocates for policy change to address systemic flaws in the criminal justice system and educating the public to raise awareness about the administration of justice in capital and juvenile sentencing in South Carolina.

With over 16 years of experience in the legal field, Franklin-Best is a criminal appeals lawyer licensed in the state courts of South Carolina, New York, and the Fourth, Fifth, and Eleventh Circuit Courts of Appeal. She is also licensed in the United States Supreme Court and represents clients in their direct appeals, cert petitions, and federal habeas corpus proceedings.
