Keep Charleston Beautiful Receives First Place Affiliate Award from Keep America Beautiful

Charleston, SC – October 28, 2011 – Keep Charleston Beautiful will be recognized by Keep America Beautiful (KAB), during Keep America Beautiful’s 58th annual National Conference in New Orleans, LA. Each year Keep America Beautiful recognizes outstanding KAB affiliates and their programs through the KAB Affiliate Awards. Currently, Keep America Beautiful operates through a national grassroots network of nearly 600 certified affiliates.
The City of Charleston’s Keep Charleston Beautiful organization is dedicated to promoting the cleanliness and beautification of the City through education, public awareness, and community involvement. In qualifying for a 2011 Affiliate Award, Keep Charleston Beautiful has met and exceeded Keep America Beautiful’s standards of excellence in litter prevention, beautification, recycling and waste reduction, community involvement, leveraging resources, raising public awareness, and recognizing individuals and groups for their efforts.
The 2011 Award application submitted by Keep Charleston Beautiful focused on key programs, such as: Clean City Clara, a litter prevention program for elementary students; Clean Cities Sweep, a cleanup and beautification program that brings together the Cities of Charleston and North Charleston for community improvement projects; Clean Up After Your Pet, a program dedicated to raising awareness about dog waste; My City is Not Your Ashtray, a program used to encourage proper cigarette butt disposal; Green Spaces Recycling, a program working to install recycling bins in every City park; Charleston Friendly Yards, a recognition program that awards individuals and groups who grow and maintain sustainable yards; and more.
To date in 2011 Keep Charleston Beautiful has worked with 3,772 volunteers who have provided the City with over 7,980 hours of service. Thanks to volunteers’ efforts and community support, Keep Charleston Beautiful has had a wonderful and productive 2011.
