Kershaw Co. Sheriff’s Foundation Deputy of the Year Award given to KCSO Sergeant Kyle Hewitt

Saturday, December 12, 2015 Kershaw County Sheriff’s Sergeant Kyle Hewitt came to the Sheriff’s Office Christmas lunch thinking one of the deputies on his shift won the 2015 Deputy of the Year award. But Sergeant Hewitt soon learned HE was the winner of the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Foundation’s award, which comes with a plaque and a $1,000 cash prize.
“Sergeant Hewitt goes the extra mile,” said Foundation chair Rajena Miles. “The person who nominated Sergeant Hewitt listed all his accomplishments including obtaining his certification as a DRE (Drug Recognition Expert). In the state of South Carolina there are only 146 DRE’s.”
Hewitt has worked for the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office for three years. He is married to Katie Hewitt and is the father of four boys, John Michael, Samuel, Seth and Joshua.

“Sergeant Hewitt always demonstrates the qualities of an outstanding deputy,” said Sheriff Jim Matthews. “He is professional, courteous and committed to our community. If my mother got pulled over, Hewitt is the kind of officer I would want on the scene.”
A local couple wishing to remain anonymous donated the money for the $1,000 cash prize. Members of the community nominated deputies. Members of the KC Sheriff’s Foundation and Sheriff Jim Matthews chose the winner based on exceptional qualities of service and dedication throughout the year.
“Working in law enforcement is an increasingly tough job,” said Sheriff Jim Matthews. “Community support means a lot to those of us who have devoted our lives to protecting our community. Thank you to those who nominated deputies and thank you to our anonymous donors for their generous contribution.”
