Kim Wilson to serve as interim principal at Wando High School
July 14, 2022Charleston County School District (CCSD) announces the appointment of Kim Wilson as interim principal at Wando High School. Wilson retired from CCSD in 2018 after 42 years in education. He has since continued to support the district by serving in an interim administrator capacity.
Wilson first worked as a teacher in West Virginia, but he and his family knew from their vacations in Myrtle Beach that they loved the South Carolina Lowcountry. As a result, on one of their trips, he packed a suit and interviewed for a local job in education. He first landed a teaching position in Horry County before eventually moving to Mount Pleasant to work in a private school as the Director of Guidance and a football coach.
In 1985, he was hired at Wando as the Director of Guidance. He remained at Wando for the next 25 years, making the school and the Mount Pleasant community his home. Both he and his wife, Betsy Wilson, worked there, and his two children were enrolled as students. Betsy was a teacher at Wando and retired from the district after teaching for 27 years.
After his role in guidance, Wilson served as an assistant principal at Wando before being offered the job of principal at R.B. Stall High School in North Charleston.
Wilson served at Stall for six years before being appointed the district’s Executive Director of Secondary Learning due to his outstanding leadership and talents in the high school arena.
Wilson holds a Bachelor’s in Education from Glenville State College, Master’s degrees in Counseling and Rehabilitation and Physical Education from Marshall University, and a Specialist’s degree in Education from The Citadel. In addition to receiving the 2013 South Carolina Principal of the Year honor, he also earned Administrator of the Year in 2006, Assistant Principal of the Year for 2002-2003, and Counselor of the Year for 1988-1989.
