Lander Journalism Professor named to Duke Energy Regional Advisory Board
August 21, 2025GREENWOOD, SC – Dr. Robert Stevenson, a highly respected journalism professor at Lander University, has been named to the Duke Energy Regional Advisory Board for Upstate South Carolina.
Duke’s Regional Advisory Boards are designed to give feedback to Duke Energy on regional issues, including local energy needs, community concerns and how the company’s operations affect the area.
“I am honored to have been nominated by area community leaders to receive an invitation to serve on the Duke Energy Regional Advisory Board for Upstate South Carolina,” Stevenson said. “Civic engagement is very important to me, and I look forward to serving.”
Stevenson, who is in his 35th year as a journalism faculty member, has published work in The New York Times, College Media Advisory Review, South Carolina Historical Magazine and The Historian, among others. He is director of Lander’s Experience Your Education (EYE) Program and the annual Film Festival. He also is the faculty advisor for The Forum campus newspaper.
His commitment to teaching is reflected through the multiple honors he has received at the University, including being named Lander’s Faculty Scholar of the Year (2005) and Distinguished Faculty of the Year (2007). He received the Monica Stranch Endowed Professorship (2008-11).
Throughout the local community, Stevenson is recognized for the Greenwood Calendar, established in 2013 as a comprehensive, interactive online calendar of local events in and around Greenwood. During its first several years, the Greenwood Calendar quickly expanded into a free hub for local news, features and entertainment.
The Greenwood Calendar enjoys an active social media presence with more than 35,000 engaged followers. In 2024, Greenwood Calendar received the Communicator with Distinction Award by the Academy of Interactive and Visual Arts (AIVA), a group of leading professionals from various disciplines of the visual arts dedicated to embracing progress and the evolving nature of traditional and interactive media.
Stevenson earned his bachelor’s degree from Lander College (now University) and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of South Carolina.
In 2016, Stevenson was named in the Top 25 National Communicator’s List. He recently was honored with the Professor for Affordable Learning (PAL) award, which recognizes professors who integrate affordable learning into their classrooms by choosing no-cost or low-cost course materials. The award is given by the South Carolina Affordable Learning (SCALE) working group under the direction of the Partnership Among South Carolina Academic Libraries (PASCAL) Consortium.
