Laurens County Cancer Association Announces Success Despite 5K Event Cancellation Due to Hurricane Helene

November 12, 2024

One month ago, the Laurens County Cancer Association (LCCA) made the difficult decision to cancel its highly anticipated 15th Annual Run Like a Mann 5K due to the severe impact of Hurricane Helene. The event, which serves as one of the largest fundraisers for the grassroots non-profit organization, was expected to draw significant community participation and financial support.

A common misconception is that the LCCA is affiliated with larger national organizations like the American Cancer Society. However, the LCCA operates independently, serving Laurens County residents without state or national affiliations. The organization relies entirely on its own fundraising efforts, as well as support from local businesses, healthcare organizations, foundations, community members, clubs, and churches.

“The decision to cancel was incredibly difficult, but it was necessary given the extensive damage our community faced after the hurricane,” said Anna Drew Miller, Executive Director of the Laurens County Cancer Association. “We were confident that our sponsors, both new and returning, would understand the situation. Their unwavering support speaks volumes about the strength and resilience of our local community.”

Despite the cancellation, LCCA exceeded its fundraising goal, raising a total of $45,800 thanks to the generosity of its sponsors. The funds will directly support the association’s mission to assist Laurens County residents diagnosed with cancer, providing much-needed resources and financial aid.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors for supporting our mission and making a difference in the lives of those battling cancer in Laurens County,” Miller added. “We also want to express our deepest gratitude to Tim Mann, whose legacy continues to inspire our work and the heart of this event. His spirit lives on through the support we receive year after year.”
