September 10, 2025

The Laurens County Council met on Monday, September 8, 2025, addressing recognitions, legislative updates, and community reports.

Special Recognition for Fire Services

Council began the meeting by recognizing the Laurens County Fire Services for their assistance during the March wildfires that spread across 424 acres in Horry County. Horry County Council issued a formal resolution of thanks, which was mounted on a wooden plaque and presented to Laurens County Fire Director Greg Lindley and Fire Chief Gabe Mull by Laurens County Council Chair Carroll.

Legislative Updates

Council continued its work on the open space residential development issue. Members unanimously approved on first reading an ordinance that, if passed on all three readings, will end the previously approved moratorium on such developments.

Also receiving approval was a second reading for a Fee-in-Lieu-of-Tax (FILOT) agreement with Project Sora. The project involves an existing building on the Gray Court–Fountain Inn line, with a planned $9.25 million investment expected to create 43 new jobs in the county.

Community Reports

Laurens County Beautiful’s Affiliate Coordinator, Courtney Stonell, provided an update on the county’s litter index, which tracks roadway cleanliness on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the best. Laurens County scored a 3.1 in 2021, improved to 2.3 in 2024, and currently holds a 2.4 score for 2025. Stonell emphasized areas of improvement remain, particularly along streets and roadways.

Post Executive Session

Council took action after executive session to allow the Administrator to complete the purchase of the 1250 gallon Fire Truck.
