Laurens County Museum Honors WWII Hero with Display of T/Sgt. Clarence E. Gibbs’ Medals and Flag
April 5, 2026The Laurens County Museum is continuing to preserve and share local history in a meaningful way—this time by honoring a hometown hero whose story spans more than eight decades.
Visitors to the museum can now view the medals and flag of U.S. Army Air Forces Technical Sergeant Clarence E. Gibbs, whose remains were identified and returned home in 2025 after being missing in action since World War II.
Gibbs, just 21 years old at the time, served as a top turret gunner aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress. His aircraft was struck by enemy fire during a bombing mission over Germany in December 1944. While other crew members were captured or accounted for, Gibbs and two others were listed as missing for more than 80 years.
Through years of investigation, historical research, and advanced DNA analysis, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency officially identified his remains in March 2025, bringing long-awaited closure to his family.
As previously highlighted on LaurensCountyBuzz.com, Gibbs’ return home was a powerful moment for the community. Residents lined roadways as his escort made its way from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport to Clinton, where he was later laid to rest with full military honors at Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
Now, the Laurens County Museum is ensuring that his story—and his sacrifice—remain visible to future generations.
The display includes Gibbs’ military medals and a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., at the request of Congresswoman Sheri Biggs. Positioned in the museum’s lobby, the exhibit offers visitors a chance to reflect on the life of a young airman who gave everything in service to his country.
The exhibit serves as both a tribute and a reminder—of sacrifice, perseverance, and the enduring commitment to bring every service member home.
For those who followed his journey last summer, the display is another chapter in a story that deeply touched Laurens County. For those learning about him for the first time, it is an opportunity to connect with a piece of local—and national—history that will not be forgotten.
