Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Sestercentennial: Essay and Poster Competition

The Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Sestercentennial Committee, in partnership with the South Carolina 250 Commission and the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce, is excited to announce an essay and poster competition open to all public, private, and home school students in Laurens County.

The essay competition, titled “Laurens County Contributions to Revolutionary War Victory,” invites students to explore and celebrate the significant role of Laurens County in the American Revolutionary War. Participants are encouraged to research and reflect on the county’s contributions to the war effort and its impact on shaping the course of history. Essays should be creative, insightful, and no longer than 500 words.

In addition to the essay competition, students are invited to participate in a poster competition titled “American Revolutionary War in Laurens County.” This competition encourages students to unleash their creativity and artistic talents as they depict scenes, symbols, and figures from the Revolutionary War era in Laurens County. Posters should be colorful, engaging, and visually represent the county’s role in the fight for independence.

“We are delighted to offer students in Laurens County the chance to delve into and honor our county’s vibrant history during the American Revolutionary War,” remarked Ernest Segars, Chair of the Laurens County Revolutionary War 250th Sestercentennial Committee. “Through these competitions, our aim is to inspire, engage, and educate the students of Laurens County about the heroes, heroines, and unheralded of the Revolutionary War.”

The Education Committee will serve as judges for the essay and poster competitions. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place winners in each category. The deadline for essay and poster submissions is May 1, 2024. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges and announced at a special awards ceremony. Prizes will be awarded to the top entries in each category, including cash prizes and recognition from local leaders and organizations.

Alternatively, you can mail your essay or poster to the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce at Post Office Box 248, Laurens, SC 29360. Please include your name, school, grade, age, and phone number with your submission. We encourage all students in public, private, and homeschools in Laurens County to participate and showcase their creativity and knowledge of our county’s Revolutionary War history.
