Laurens County School District 55 Awarded $7,000 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant
February 24, 2026Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is proud to announce it has been awarded a $7,000 Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant sponsored by the South Carolina Department of Agriculture. This funding will enhance the District’s Student Nutrition Program and directly supports LCSD 55’s commitment to fostering an A+ Atmosphere as part of Building a 5-Star Culture of Excellence.
At LCSD 55, creating an environment where students can thrive academically, socially, and physically is a top priority. Access to fresh, nutritious foods is a key component of maintaining a healthy school climate that empowers students to perform at their best each day.
The grant will allow the District to incorporate a variety of South Carolina-grown fruits and vegetables into school offerings this spring, while also strengthening partnerships with local farmers and produce companies throughout the state.
“I am so thrilled to have this funding to support our students and allow them to enjoy locally-grown fruits and vegetables,” said Ms. Wanda Knight, LCSD 55 Director of Student Nutrition Services.
Knight Added, “We plan to utilize this funding in the spring by purchasing some South Carolina-grown fruits and vegetables, such as cabbage, lettuce, broccoli, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, and strawberries. It is a win-win opportunity for South Carolina farmers, the Student Nutrition Program, and our students. It will also allow us to work with local farms and produce companies while providing our students with a chance to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables. We thank the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and would love to see this program continue.”
By increasing access to fresh produce, LCSD 55 continues to prioritize student wellness while reinforcing the importance of healthy choices and agricultural awareness. Supporting local agriculture not only benefits students but also strengthens the broader Laurens County and South Carolina communities.
LCSD 55 extends sincere appreciation to the South Carolina Department of Education for sharing information about the grant and to the South Carolina Department of Agriculture for its investment in student health and for partnering with schools to promote nutritious options that contribute to an A+ Healthy Atmosphere across the District.
