Lawrence Flynn, public finance attorney with Pope Flynn, receives Leadership in Law Award

April 2, 2018

Lawrence Flynn, a public finance attorney and member of the management team with Columbia-based law firm Pope Flynn, LLC, has received a Leadership in Law award from SC Lawyers Weekly, a news journal that delivers essential legal news, opinions, and court decisions for practicing attorneys in the state. The 2018 Leadership in Law award recognizes the work of 30 attorneys in South Carolina who “represent the most influential leaders within our state’s legal community.” Honorees are selected by a panel of judges, based on professional accomplishment, personal accomplishment, and community involvement within the Palmetto State.

“I am honored by this recognition from SC Lawyers Weekly,” Flynn said. “I have so much to be thankful for – from my family to the team at Pope Flynn. I am blessed to be surrounded by great people. ‘Great people’ specifically includes my mentor and the founder of our law firm, Margaret Pope; Margaret generously set the table for my career in public finance. She offered me a job and taught me how to be a lawyer. For three years we drove around the State visiting clients and working on projects, which gave me the chance to pick her brain. Her influence is invaluable and has been deeply important in my life and the development of my career.”

“The particular part of the law where our firm focuses demands meticulous, exacting work, coupled with the ability to conceive of innovative financing solutions for public projects. But by far the most challenging part of my work has been starting a new firm at the height of the recession of 2008, and helping develop it into a thriving boutique firm dedicated to public finance and governmental counsel. It has been a steep learning curve — we began with three attorneys and have grown to eleven, all very tightly focused on our core practices. Through working with the entire Pope Flynn team to build and maintain our business, we have developed a law firm that is second to none. My whole experience has been a unique combination of humbling, stressful, and gratifying.”

Flynn graduated with a degree in history from Duke University, then went on to receive a JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Flynn serves as a board member and vice president of the board of directors of SC Thrive, a non-profit that combines access to a number of state and private programs as well as training for individuals and families in crisis in order to help bring them to independence and stability.

Flynn also serves as a member of the Duke University Alumni Admissions Advisory Committee, a member of the Governmental Law Section of the South Carolina Bar, and a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers. He is past treasurer and board member of the City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Foundation. Flynn is a graduate of Leadership South Carolina, Leadership Columbia, and The Riley Institute on Diversity and was featured in the 2016 class of the Columbia Business Monthly Best & Brightest 35 and Under.
