LCWSC’s Commitment to Water Quality: The Importance of Line Flushing
April 15, 2024The Laurens County Water & Sewer Commission (LCWSC) emphasizes the critical role of line flushing in ensuring clean and reliable water for residents. Line flushing, a proactive maintenance practice, involves the strategic flushing of water through water mains at high velocity. This process effectively removes sediment, minerals, and other debris that can accumulate over time. Executive Director Jeff Field highlights its significance, stating, “Line flushing is essential for maintaining water quality, improving flow, and preventing potential issues in the distribution system. Additionally, all water systems are required to have an effective flushing program by SCDHEC.”
Why is line flushing necessary? Over the years, sediment and mineral deposits naturally build up in water mains. These accumulations can lead to reduced water quality and flow rates, impacting the efficiency and reliability of the water distribution system. By conducting routine line flushing, LCWSC aims to clear out these deposits, ensuring that customers receive clean and fresh water every time they turn on their taps.
Field further explains the benefits of this proactive approach, noting that it not only enhances water quality but also reduces after-hours customer complaints and the overall cost of treatment at its Lake Greenwood Water Treatment Facility. “Line flushing contributes to the efficiency and integrity of our water system,” he adds.
LCWSC conducts line flushing periodically throughout the year as part of its commitment to maintaining water quality and system integrity. During these flushing activities, residents may notice temporary changes in water pressure or slight discoloration. However, Field reassures customers that these effects are normal and should dissipate shortly.
LCWSC encourages residents to stay informed about upcoming line flushing schedules and to contact them if they have any concerns or questions about their water supply. By working together, LCWSC and the community can ensure that clean, safe water continues to flow reliably to homes and businesses throughout Laurens County.
