COLUMBIA, SC – September 11, 2013 – When you’re stressed, especially if you work in a high-pressure environment, you often carry that anxiety with you wherever you go. Upstream founders Jemme Stewart and T. Hilda White MD have developed a set of straightforward techniques you can use to relax your own mind.
Do you ever catch yourself in the middle of a conversation with a friend, realizing you’ve zoned out, thinking about that conversation you had with your boss?
Or while driving home, are you actually hearing the music and taking in the scenery, or are you running through that to-do list in your head for the fifth time today?
Not being present in the current moment has become epidemic in an age when you can be plugged in 24-7. Mindfulness practice is a simple, accessible approach to unplugging that is growing rapidly in popularity. However, learning to become mindful is a difficult mountain to climb alone.
Upstream is the first wellness studio in the Midlands to offer Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) training. Developed at UMass Medical School through neuroscience research, MBSR is a relaxation skill set proven to help individuals manage worry, stress, burnout, fatigue, sleep issues, chronic pain and more.
MBSR training allows us to make room in our minds for “choice awareness” on every level. How luxurious, to be able to turn off the autopilot, make clear choices, be more creative and actually participate in our lives.
The founders of Upstream: A Center for Mindfulness Practice and Holistic Mental Health, located in Five Points near USC and downtown Columbia, S.C., offer an 8-week class series in mindfulness practice in their peaceful studio, outfitted by interior designer Toni Forrest. Students of all ability levels are provided with a skill set of relaxation and breathing techniques to change the way they approach stress.
Private sessions for individuals and corporate training courses for offices, business groups or company retreats are available upon request.
