LES school counselor named Elementary School Counselor of the Year

The Palmetto State School Counselor Association honored a Lexington County School District One employee with one of its top awards during the 2017 annual conference.
An active member of PSSCA, Lexington Elementary School Counselor Michelle R. Privette received the Elementary School Counselor of the Year award. Throughout her career, Privette served on the PSSCA board and has presented at PSSCA and American School Counselor Association conferences. She is the current secretary on the PSSCA’s governing board.
Privette previously served on Lexington District One’s Caring Communities Committee, district School Counselor Technology Committee and LES School Improvement Council. She’s a current member of the district School Counselor ADEPT team and also authors “The Creative Counselor Blog.”
“By meeting with my child on a regular basis, her confidence increased and we started to see a positive change. Mrs. Privette taught her how to handle issues in school, which has been valuable in her life. I am very grateful to her,” an LES parent said.
A school counselor for 23 years, Privette helped White Knoll Elementary achieve Recognized ASCA Model Program status in 2009. She began working at LES in 2014.
“Throughout my career, regardless of the school setting, I have advocated for my school counseling program, promoting its impact on students and how it makes a difference in their successes,” Privette said. “Advocacy is an integral part of a school counseling program as it educates administrators, teachers, parents and the community about the value of school counselors’ work, programs and impact on student achievement.”
Privette earned her Master of Education in educational psychology from the University of South Carolina. She received National Board Certification in 2004 and again in 2013.
Michelle was also selected as the PSSCA nominee for National School Counselor of the Year.
