Lexington County Councilman recognized as SC Councils of Governments 2024 Volunteer of the Year for advocacy on senior care safety

March 31, 2025

Lexington County Councilman Darrell Hudson has been named the South Carolina Councils of Governments 2024 Volunteer of the Year. As Chair of the Central Midlands Area Agency on Aging’s Regional Aging and Disability Advisory Committee (RADAC), Hudson has worked tirelessly to address the safety of seniors in the Midlands and has been at the forefront of efforts to install cameras in nursing homes and senior care facilities.

His advocacy began after a personal tragedy in 2019, when his mother went missing from an assisted living facility in Lexington County. The facility had no cameras, and Hudson discovered that state law didn’t require them. His mother was later found with a head injury outside the facility. Since that incident, Councilman Hudson has been an advocate for legislation requiring cameras to be installed in all entrances and exits of nursing homes and senior care facilities.

His efforts led to the passing of a resolution in 2020 calling for the state legislature to adopt such legislation. Hudson’s leadership on this issue continues as the Central Midlands Council of Governments (CMCOG) Board of Directors passed a resolution in October 2024 supporting the same cause. Several municipalities have also since joined the call for camera requirements in senior care facilities.

While South Carolina has yet to enact a law mandating cameras in long-term care facilities, Hudson’s ongoing dedication to the safety of South Carolina’s seniors highlights his commitment to creating safer, more transparent environments for vulnerable residents in assisted living facilities.
