Lexington student campaigns for a cause at Children’s Congress

As an eighth-grader at Meadow Glen Middle during the 2016–2017 school year, Julian M. Negron received an invitation to be a 2017 delegate for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Children’s Congress July 24–26.
Student delegates from all 50 states travel to Washington, D.C., every two years to meet with government officials and help them understand what life is like for children living with Type 1 diabetes, a cause close to Negron’s heart.
Negron and his family have a long history of advocating for diabetes research. His mother had gestational diabetes with both of her pregnancies, and Negron was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2015. As a family, the Negrons volunteered at the Palmetto Chapter’s JDRF One Walk and Hope Gala events for several years, with Negron serving as a JDRF Youth Ambassador.
Next week, Negron and other student delegates will advocate for funding for treatment and research as scientists work toward a cure. Approximately 150 students will participate in the 2017 event.
