Life-saving equipment to be accessible at all Richland Library locations

March 28, 2019

In an effort to save lives, Richland Library is receiving a more than $16,000 grant from the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation to purchase automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and accessories to equip all of our locations. Staff will install the new devices through the beginning of April.

AEDs will allow our Safety and Security Department to protect the more than 40,000 individuals who visit our library locations each month, as well as our nearly 1,000 staff members and volunteers. The new devices will provide immediate medical assistance to cardiac arrest victims. According to the American Heart Association, immediate CPR or AED use can double – even triple – survival rates.

In addition, designated library staff are taking part in First Aid/CPR/AED training and obtaining a two-year certification to ensure they are able to quickly and efficiently operate the equipment in the event of an emergency.

Richland Library’s Safety and Security Department is proud to accept this grant – the first one ever in the department’s history. Consisting of a 12-year veteran police officer who supervises 14 full-time and 13 part-time positions across the library system, the department monitors library locations to maintain a safe, secure and welcoming environment.
