Lighten Up! – Don’t Pack Away The Pastels Just Because It’s Winter
January 22, 2016By Brian Maynor
Winter is traditionally the season of dark, deep, rich hues, but not this year.
Pastels, a class of color often regulated to spring and summer is making its presence know now and creating quite a stark contrast to the maroons, plums, hunter greens and other traditional winter colors. And surprisingly they work.
For everyone who loves lighter colors or just wants a break from the common heavy shades, here are some of the most playful ways to wear your pastels during the winter months and make them look perfectly appropriate:
1. Suiting. Break up the navy, charcoal and tweed offerings with pale, or should we say frosty, shades of lavender, pink and blues. The key to pulling off these lighter shades is to match the silhouettes. Lighter colors evoke softer frames, so keep the pieces relaxed and rounded rather than stiff and angular. You also want to balance the pieces for the season and the best way to do this is by keeping your accents dark. The embroidery, belts, bags and shoes will tie everything together perfectly.
2. Monochromatic outfits. Wearing on color head-to-toe can sound daunting or boring, but when it’s done the right way it is nothing less than perfection. Some people keep it easy with jumpsuits while others like to use coordinated separates, but either option will look flawless when you keep them simple and clean. The trick to pulling off this single palette is to remember ‘less is more’. Avoid any distracting prints or patterns and even jewelry in favor of textured fabrics and clean lines. The only accessory you need is a strong lip, but a statement earring is ok if you crave a little sparkle.
3. Prints, patterns and texture. All three of these have been popular trends for the past few seasons, so why not keep them going this winter. You’ll be on trend whether you gravitate toward smaller, accent prints or bold, abstract patterns and texture comes in all varieties from quilted tops and coats to mohair and metallic sateen skirts and pants.
4. Outerwear. Bulky, heavy winter coats get a lighter look and feel when you choose a pastel shade. Whether you like updating traditional herringbone patterns or rocking the oversized faux-fur trend, draping a one of these options over your shoulders will have your look on point. Just remember it’s better to go with a longer, clean line than a short, bulky one.
5. Know your brands. Shopping is a necessary element to revamp your look, but there are a plethora of ways and places to do it. When you’re shopping online, sample sales, clearance sales or second-hand it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the volume, so to start off it’s best to stick to the brands you know work for you. Not only will you have more luck finding a piece that works, you will build your confidence as you shop allowing you to explore new brands or styles.
Winter doesn’t have to mean weight, as this trend proves. You can create seasonally appropriate outfits in light, pastel hues when you know a few simple styling tips and tricks. So dig out your favorite summer pieces and get more wear out of them now.
