Literacy SC hosts math film at The Nick for Pi Day, gives free tickets to area teachers

February 19, 2026

Literacy SC is kicking off its 2026 Better Together campaign. This year-long series of unique community events will bring education and Columbia together in unexpected ways. First up is a private screening of the documentary Counted Out just ahead of of Pi Day.

This reservation-only event takes place Thursday, March 12, from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm at The Nickelodeon Theatre on Main Street in Downtown Columbia.

Counted Out explores a reality we often overlook. It shows us how math skills are a major factor in who gets a seat at the table in our local economy. As Literacy SC grows its core classes, this film serves as the launchpad for that conversation in the Midlands.

“We want to change the way people think about numbers,” says Lisa Cole, CEO of Literacy SC. “What would it look like if all of us had the math skills to advocate for ourselves, our paychecks, and our future? We’re asking local educators to join us for a night out on Main Street. Let’s see how we can work together so no one in South Carolina is counted out.”

Immediately following the film, board members Dr. Theresa Harrison and Dr. Suzanne D. Miller will lead a panel of experts from USC, Columbia College, and The STEM Lab through a discussion on how math literacy impacts local power and opportunity.

How to Attend: Complimentary tickets are set aside for math teachers, district administrators and area educators. To learn more about the Better Together campaign and to claim your free tickets, email [email protected] or visit: literacysc.org/better-together
