Litwin receives inaugural Cull Research & Innovation Award

As a highlight of Prisma Health’s Education and Research Institute Showcase Awards, Dr. Alain Litwin was named the inaugural recipient of the David L. Cull MD Research & Innovation Award. The award is to be presented annually to a Prisma Health team member who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishment in advancing research and innovation at Prisma Health in collaboration with its academic partners.

The award is named in honor of the groundbreaking and transformative efforts of vascular surgeon David L. Cull, MD, who served as the vice president of clinical and academics integration at Prisma Health and the Health Sciences Center until his retirement in 2023.

Dr. Alain Litwin

Alain Litwin, MD, is chief scientific officer for Prisma Health and in this role focuses on research growth and collaboration. He joined the healthcare system in 2017 where he has served as executive director of the Prisma Health Addiction Medicine Center growing a team to over 50 researchers, clinicians and peer support specialists. He also serves as vice chair of academics and research in the Department of Medicine Prisma Health Upstate. His academic roles include serving as a professor of medicine for University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville and a professor of psychology for Clemson University.

Litwin was recently recognized by Governor McMaster for his work in championing the science of addiction. His work has led to transformation of related policy and payer standards, and informed national and global guidelines for treatment. His Prisma Health team collaborates to improve the health of South Carolinians, to promote the success of our investigators and academic partners and to share advances nationally and globally.

Litwin earned his undergraduate degree in neurobiology at the University of California, Berkeley, his medical degree and master’s in public health from Tulane University School of Medicine, and a master’s in science in clinical research methods from Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
