Local Students Headed to Nationals After Winning State Restaurant Management Title
March 16, 2026While many high school students spent early March preparing for spring break, a dedicated group of students from the Golden Strip Career Center (GSCC) was focused on a higher-stakes goal: proving they have what it takes to run a successful restaurant.
That focus paid off last week as the Golden Strip Career Center took home first place in the Restaurant Management Competition at the 2026 South Carolina ProStart Invitational. The victory secured the team a spot in the national finals and earned the students thousands of dollars in scholarships.
The Shark Tank of the Kitchen
The management side of the ProStart Invitational is often described as a mix of a business pitch and a real-world stress test. Unlike the culinary division, where students cook under pressure, the management team must develop and present an original restaurant concept from the ground up.
The GSCC team was required to pitch a comprehensive business plan to a panel of industry judges, covering:
-
Branding and Design: Creating a name, logo, and physical layout for their concept.
-
Menu Engineering: Developing a full menu with descriptions and precise pricing.
-
Marketing Strategy: Detailing how they would attract and retain customers in a competitive market.
-
Financial Planning: Projecting costs and navigating the complex economics of the food service industry.
The students also had to defend their decisions during a rigorous question-and-answer session, where judges posed real-world scenarios regarding staffing, food safety, and customer service challenges.
A Tradition of Excellence
The win continues a strong legacy for the Golden Strip Career Center, which serves students from Hillcrest, Mauldin, and J.L. Mann High Schools. The center has consistently placed in the top tiers of the state competition, but a first-place finish in the management category represents a significant achievement for this year’s cohort.
In addition to the prestigious state title, the team members were awarded substantial scholarships to pursue degrees in hospitality and tourism. Many winners from this program go on to attend the University of South Carolina’s School of Hospitality and Tourism or other top-tier culinary institutes.
Next Stop: Baltimore
The journey is far from over. As state champions, the Golden Strip Career Center team will represent South Carolina at the National ProStart Invitational in Baltimore, Maryland, scheduled for April 24–26, 2026.
There, they will compete against state winners from across the country for a share of hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional scholarships and national recognition. For these local students, the next month will be spent refining their pitch and perfecting their business model as they prepare to take their local talent to the national stage.
