Local women unite to boost youth literacy at “Power of the Purse” luncheon
February 16, 2026Black River United Way’s Women United is preparing to host its signature fundraiser, “Power of the Purse,” an annual luncheon dedicated to tackling early childhood literacy gaps in the local community.
The event is scheduled for March 18 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the historic Winyah Indigo Society Hall, located at 509 Prince Street in Georgetown.
Entering its fourth year, the 2026 luncheon aims to fund the Heroes for Literacy program, which provides critical support to students in kindergarten through third grade.
According to Nicole Hart, chairwoman of Women United, the reading level for K-3 students in Georgetown and Williamsburg counties lags the state average. As such, they have set a goal to assist between 40 to 60 students in the two counties this year, ensuring they achieve age-appropriate reading levels.
“Power of the Purse is more than a luncheon,” Hart added. “It’s a celebration of women changemakers coming together to expand our impact and show what is possible when we unite for good.”
Attendees can expect a program that balances philanthropy with fine dining and networking. Highlights of the afternoon include:
- Gourmet Dining: A lunch curated by The Southern Culinarian.
- Keynote Insights: A panel discussion featuring local women leaders and a surprise guest speaker.
- Fundraising: An engaging silent auction featuring products and services from women-owned businesses with the proceeds benefitting the Heroes for Literacy youth education initiative.
The Black River United Way encourages community members to invest in meaningful change through their presence and financial commitment, especially its Tote Sponsors for the luncheon: Santee Cooper, Elliott, Phelan, Kunz, LLC and Nicole Hart Interiors.
