Lowcountry Food Bank receives $10,000 donation from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation

October 26, 2020

The Lowcountry Food Bank (LCFB) announced today a $10,000 grant from The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation to help provide hunger-relief to Lowcountry children. The LCFB will use the funding to support its School Pantry program throughout coastal South Carolina. School Pantry reaches children through monthly distributions of shelf-stable food at LCFB partner schools. This program brings families together by providing nutritious foods to be prepared and enjoyed at home.

The overall food insecurity rate in the 10 coastal counties of South Carolina that the LCFB serves has increased by 58% since the COVID-19 pandemic began, which has increased the total number of neighbors in our state to 233,000 people who face hunger every day. The increase in food insecurity for children is even more devastating with a 76% increase, resulting in 75,000 children who do not have consistent access to the nutritious food they need to live healthy, active lives.

“The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is proud to support the food bank’s work to fight child hunger because no child should have to worry about where their next meal will come from,” said Adam Bass, president of the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation. “At Food Lion, we are continuing to look for ways we can support food banks during this critical time as they are working overtime to respond to ever-increasing needs. It is our hope that this grant will ease their burden and enable them to continue to help provide meals to the many children relying on them.”

“We are so proud to be a long-standing partner of Food Lion,” said Pat Walker, LCFB President & CEO. “Through more than 45 Food Lion stores in the 10-county area we serve, Food Lion has made a huge impact for more than a decade in helping us lead the fight against hunger in our community. Food Lion donated more than 3.3 million pounds of food to us last year, which created more than 2.7 million meals for our neighbors who struggle with hunger.”

The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity in communities they serve.
