Lowcountry STEM Collaborative receives support from Boeing

CHARLESTON, SC – January 17, 2012 – The Citadel, with help from Boeing, is leading efforts to increase STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – education and activities in the Lowcountry.
Under the auspices of The Citadel STEM Center, the Lowcountry STEM Collaborative has accepted a challenge grant from Boeing that over three years will raise $600,000 to bolster resources and educational efforts in STEM for the Lowcountry.
“For our region to be globally competitive in an innovation-driven economy, we must have a reliable STEM talent pipeline, producing well-qualified STEM-competent workers,” said Carolyn Kelley, director of The STEM Center of Excellence at The Citadel. She is coordinating the efforts of the Lowcountry STEM Collaborative.
“The Lowcountry STEM Collaborative since November 2010 has worked to build a strong network of prestigious leaders in business, government, and education all working to advance STEM literacy in the Lowcountry,” Kelley said. “We have made extraordinary progress in a short amount of time—a direct result of community teamwork and support.”
Boeing will provide a 20 percent match, up to $100,000, on all gifts received from individuals and corporations over the course of three years. The challenge grant allows the Lowcountry STEM Collaborative to bolster community support and open the door for future grant proposals beyond the Lowcountry community. The Lowcountry STEM Collaborative is a non-profit, regional organization designed to plan, promote and implement STEM education initiatives that strengthen and expand STEM literacy in our region. The collaborative engages STEM industries, educators, community stakeholders, non-profits, and governmental entities in preparing South Carolina’s youth to be successful in several industry sectors in the state.
The challenge grant will provide funding to advance the efforts of the Lowcountry STEM Collaborative. A primary goal is to create a regional STEM clearinghouse. This clearinghouse will make accessible STEM opportunities such as internships and scholarships, STEM programs and activities, and will contain a database of volunteers.
