Lower Richland High School and EngenuitySC host third “Dress for Success” business etiquette student showcase, April 26

The Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) committee at Lower Richland High School (LRHS) will partner with EngenuitySC to host the third annual “Dress for Success” business etiquette showcase on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. at LRHS. Dress for Success helps students answer questions like “How should you dress for an interview?” and “What is proper dining etiquette for a business luncheon?” in a fun, peer-to-peer showcase, starring select LRHS students who receive hands-on guidance throughout the initiative.
Makeovers, New Business Attire, Dining Etiquette and More
To prepare for Dress for Success, 15 LRHS students participated in wardrobe consultations and shopped for business-appropriate outfits at JCPenney with mentors from Leadership Columbia and other professionals from around the Midlands. Students also learned about the reasoning behind professional clothing and accessory choices as part of JCPenney’s own “Dress for Success” program.
Throughout the initiative, students participated in “soft skills” training sessions, including an etiquette dinner at Solstice Kitchen led by Georgia Doran, Director of Office of Career Management at the University of South Carolina’s Moore School of Business. Soft skills include communication and language; personal habits, leadership and other interpersonal skills.
To complete their pre-showcase skillset, students receive makeovers the day of Dress for Success, provided by trade students at Paul Mitchell The School Columbia, featuring business-appropriate makeup and hairstyles.
The Dress for Success student showcase – April 26, 2-3 p.m. at LRHS’ auditorium – provides the selected students a chance to share what they learned from the initiative with their classmates. The showcase will serve as a fundraiser for LRHS’ STEM program; the STEM committee will be selling tickets to the showcase prior to the event. LRHS is located at 2615 Lower Richland Blvd., Hopkins, S.C. 29061.
The inaugural Dress for Success showcase in 2014 was launched as a part of the STEM program’s year-round soft skills initiative, led by Paul Smith, founder of BEST Carolina. LRHS and lead project coordinator, EngenuitySC, place great importance on students’ ability to navigate the business world successfully, from learning how to answer questions confidently to expanding their understanding of STEM fields through coursework initiatives.
