M. Dumas & Sons celebrates 100 year anniversary in Charleston

January 25, 2017

Men’s specialty retailer and King Street institution M. Dumas & Sons marks an important milestone in 2017 — its 100 year anniversary in Charleston. Today, the iconic family-owned retailer on the corner of King and Society Streets announces its “100 Year Celebration,” a series of events to be held monthly throughout the year in honor of this landmark in M. Dumas history. The festivities center around a special showcase on Thursday, April 20 featuring a presentation of a century of M. Dumas & Sons fashion.

David1“We are so grateful and humbled by the support we’ve received from the Charleston community since my grandfather first opened the store in 1917,” says owner David Dumas. “We’re excited to host this year-long celebration of M. Dumas history and style as a way to thank our city and our loyal customers for the last 100 years.”

Since 1917, M. Dumas & Sons has led the evolution of Charleston style, becoming one of the city’s most trusted purveyors of men’s fashion. Initially known as a uniform shop for service jobs, M. Dumas & Sons transitioned into selling menswear around 1948, when the store introduce Levi Jeans to the Charleston area. The retailer served as the sole provider of uniforms for naval officers stationed in town during the Korean and Vietnam Wars, while also offering an extensive selection of hunting and outdoor apparel.

In the 1960s, M. Dumas & Sons started to gain recognition for its fashion denim, and transitioned full-time into men’s apparel in 1973 after moving to its current location on the corner of King and Society Streets. Over the years, the retailer has played an instrumental role in introducing major brands such as Sperry, Woolrich, CC Filson, Barbour, Duckhead and Southern Tide to the Charleston market. In the fall of 2015, the store underwent a $2 million renovation to its iconic corner location.

Details of each month’s event will be announced throughout the year on the M. Dumas & Sons website and social media channels. Follow the celebrations on Facebook at and on Instagram and search posts using the hashtag #Dumas100
