Make Music Columbia returns June 21

Columbia participates in a global celebration of making music on the longest day of the year.
Make Music Columbia will return for its fourth year with a wild and wonderful mix of free outdoor musical events on Thursday, June 21. Make Music Columbia happens each year on the summer solstice and brings people of all ages and skill levels together to make music.
Completely different from a typical musical festival, Make Music concerts are performed by anyone who wants to take part and enjoyed by everyone who wants to attend. The organizers of Make Music Day Columbia, One Columbia for Arts and History, Rice Music House and WXRY FM, invite everyone from professional musicians to people who have never picked up an instrument to join in and create
music on streets, sidewalks, porches, plazas, parks, gardens, store fronts and other public spaces on the longest day of the year. Any musician, amateur or professional, young or old, is invited to take part by signing up at makemusiccolumbia.org; registration closes on June 19. Likewise, businesses, buildings, schools, churches, and other institutions can visit the website to offer their outdoor spaces as concert locations.
Relax along the banks of the Congaree River with friends and family and watch the sun go down! This year’s Mass Appeal series allows everyone to join in and make noise. This year’s event takes place in the evening, alongside the rescheduled Bierkeller Spider Lilly Happy Hour! The event is family friendly with musical offerings for kids and adults. Attendees will be strumming the ukulele, learning to bucket drum with Jess Oliver from Girls Rock Columbia, and getting a harmonica lesson from musician Jim “Wallstreet” Coulliard from 5:00 to 9:00pm at the historic riverfront pump house complex. The Columbia Fireflies will participate in Make Music Day Columbia by giving the first 2500 fans in the game that day a Fireflies Kazoo. Fans are also encouraged to bring along their own musical instrument to the game as there will be times during the game where fans will be encouraged to participate together in the playing of songs, i.e. ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’. (Fans with large instruments are asked to
sit in the Bojangles’ Berm to not obstruct the view of other fans.) In partnershipwith Make Music Day Columbia, there will be artists performing outside the gates as fans arrive at Spirit Communications Park.
Make Music Day encourages every form of music making and encourages local
musicians, and would-be musicians to register for the match-making site and schedule a time to play!
