Master Educator Leads Profession Through Online Collaboration

COLUMBIA, SC – Killian Elementary School teacher Ramona Brown has been selected as a facilitator for the National Education Association’s Great Public Schools (NEA GPS) Network. The network is an online community where teachers, parents, education support professionals, and other community stakeholders can share ideas and resources aimed at improving student success.

Over 1,000 individuals applied to be the inaugural leaders of this new online network. Brown and 60 others were selected for their knowledge and understanding of their topic; their ability to facilitate a national discussion presenting a range of differing viewpoints; their technology skills, necessary for facilitating an online community; and their commitment to helping fellow educators improve their skills to foster student success.

Brown is a third grade, National Board Certified literacy teacher at Killian. She believes the professional development that teachers receive has a direct impact on the learning students receive. She says it’s important for teachers to regularly hone their professional skills.

“I believe public education provides a pathway to a better life for all students,” said Brown.

Brown is a member of the South Carolina Education Association and the NEA. Participants can join the network to address common interests in specific topics and issues that impact educator and student success. Topics are diverse, ranging from bullying to state learning standards, from teacher evaluation to teaching English language learners.
