Master Minds: Ben Franklin’s success secret
February 15, 2016By Jerry Bellune
Benjamin Franklin should be your role model.
He had a curious mind and explored many pursuits.
He was an author, publisher, inventor and ladies man.
He was a diplomat sent abroad “to lie for his country.”
His assessment method may not have been original.
But he was smart enough to make it his own.
Faced with a difficult decision he would:
Draw a vertical line down the middle of a note card.
On the left he listed “Benefits/Advantages.”
On the right he listed “Risks/Disadvantages.”
He might carry the card with him for days.
In that time, he thought carefully about the decision.
He continued to list Benefits as they came to mind.
He listed Risks as well as he thought of them.
Finally he would study what he had written.
He gave a value to each item on each side of the line.
He weighed the Benefits against the Risks.
Which had the most weight made his decision for him.
He proceeded if Benefits outweighed Risks.
He stopped or reframed the decision if the other way.
If the two were close, he delayed a decision.
This greatly improved his odds of success.
It also helped him avoid failures and catastrophes.
Even more it built his confidence in his decisions.
And it gave him peace of mind either way.
We practice his method in our Master Minds.
He present our questions to fellow Master Minders.
They help us weight the pros and cons.
It is a benefit to have the wisdom of others.
We make better decisions and avoid failures.
Our next Master Mind will be Friday, March 4.
We start at 9:45 a.m. at the Flight Deck in Lexington.
