Mavis Staples Brings GRAMMY-Winning Voice to Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College, Jan. 31st

COLUMBIA, SC – Named one of Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Singers,” Mavis

Staples will rock the house at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College on Saturday,

Jan. 31, 2015, at 7:30 p.m. with R&B, pop and gospel hits from across her legendary career.

Mavis Staples has graced stages worldwide for more than 60 years, and now, at age 75, the

soul-singing icon still has audiences dancing in the aisles.

An unexpected innovator, Staples has recently become known for fresh, boundary-breaking

collaborations with artists across a variety of genres. On One True Vine, her latest GRAMMY-

nominated studio album (her 14th), she partners with Jeff Tweedy, frontman of the popular indie

band Wilco, to create a beautiful new rendition of Funkadelic’s hit, “Can You Get To That.” This

is the second album on which Staples and Tweedy have collaborated; the first being GRAMMY

Award-winning You Are Not Alone in 2010.

Staples will perform new music as well as the gospel and R&B hits that made her a household

name.

Staples’ made her musical debut as a member of her family’s musical group, The Staple

Singers, known for their hit singles “I’ll Take You There” and Billboard #1 “Let’s Do It Again.” A

close family friend of political activists Martin Luther King Jr. and Bob Dylan, Staples gave

soulful voice to the equality movement of the 1960s with her siblings as The Staple Singers,

belting “message” songs like “Long Walk to D.C.” and “Respect Yourself.”

The songstress recently celebrated her 75th birthday with a special concert, I’ll Take You There

– Celebrating 75 Years of Mavis Staples, held in her honor in her hometown of Chicago on Nov.

19, 2014. The star-studded show featured performances by fellow musicians and friends, from

Gregg Allman and Bonnie Raitt to Widespread Panic and Grace Potter.

But even at the age of 75, Staples is nowhere near slowing down.

“This prolific artist could be resting on her laurels at this point in her career, but she’s making

new music!” says Katie Fox, Executive Director at Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical

College. “She never stops creating and inventing, and that’s inspiring.”
