Mayor Benjamin to visit Doing The Most Good Academy at The Salvation Army of the Midlands

October 22, 2020

Mayor Benjamin will visit the Doing The Most Good Academy at The Salvation Army Center for Worship and Service on Thursday, October 22 at 1:30pm. “We look forward to Mayor Benjamin visiting the Academy. The Doing The Most Good Academy is a great example of the Midlands community coming together and focusing on the needs of children struggling to stay connected to their virtual classroom. Our goal is to help children thrive in the new normal of E-Learning,” said Major Henry Morris, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of the Midlands.

The Academy program is designed to add structure, supervision and one-on-one tutoring for the student. Teachers, staff and volunteers are playing a critical role in providing guidance and helping students reach their academic goals while adjusting to learning in a virtual classroom setting.

The Salvation Army provides the students with breakfast, lunch and two nutritious snacks each day. The UofSC School of Medicine medical students, UofSC College of Education Teaching Fellows and Senior Resources Foster Grandparents have joined forces to tutor and nurture the students.

“Children and their families are very important to The Salvation Army of the Midlands,” said Major Benita Morris. “We saw a need in light of the COVID-19 outbreak shutting down schools. Parents reported the difficulty to teach multiple children at different levels while working full-time jobs; lack of technology skills; no access to internet service or material too difficult for parents to teach. We knew we had to help these families. It was this spirit that inspired The Salvation Army to create the Doing The Most Good Academy.”
