Mayor Tecklenburg announces selection of Luther Reynolds as Charleston Police Chief

Alongside members of City Council and community leaders, Charleston Mayor John Tecklenburg announced the selection of Luther Reynolds as the new chief of the city of Charleston Police Department. Chief Reynolds is set to begin on April 16, 2018.
Luther Reynolds is currently an Assistant Chief of Police for the Montgomery County Police Department in Maryland. He has worked for the Montgomery County Police Department since 1988. He has held the ranks of Patrol Officer, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain and Assistant Chief. From 2000 to 2002, he was a Captain/Station Commander in the 2nd District. From 2002 to 2005, he was the Captain/Director of the Personnel Division.
From 2005 to 2008, Reynolds was the Captain/Director of the Training and Education Division. From 2008 to 2010, he was the Captain/Commander of the Special Operations Division. From 2010 to 2013, he was the Captain/Station Commander of the 5th District. From 2013 to 2017, he was the Assistant Chief of the Administrative Bureau. He has held the position of Assistant Chief of the Patrol Bureau since October of 2017.
Chief Reynolds has a Master of Science degree in Business with a concentration in Information Systems Technology from Johns Hopkins University. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology from Florida State University. He is a graduate of the FBI’s National Academy and National Executive Institute, the Major Cities Chiefs Association’s Police Executive Leadership Institute (PELI), and the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP).
