Medically Speaking Series Spurs Conversation About Prevalent Heart Condition
January 24, 2026A common but serious heart rhythm condition took center stage as the 2026 Medically Speaking series kicked off with a well-attended community discussion on atrial fibrillation.
Atrial fibrillation, often referred to as AFib, is a type of irregular heartbeat that can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. The educational event brought together medical professionals and community members for an in-depth look at the condition, its symptoms, and available treatment options.
Medically Speaking is a continuing lecture series featuring physicians from Self Regional Healthcare. The program is sponsored by Self Regional Healthcare, Lander University, and the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce, with the goal of connecting the community to trusted medical experts and timely health information.
Cardiologists Dr. Rollo Villareal and Dr. Efehi Igbinomwanhia of Advanced Cardiology Associates led the discussion, helping attendees better understand how atrial fibrillation is diagnosed, managed, and treated. The physicians emphasized the importance of recognizing symptoms such as heart palpitations, shortness of breath, fatigue, and dizziness, as well as the need for early medical evaluation.
Community and institutional leaders were also in attendance, underscoring the collaborative nature of the series. Participants included Trentsie Williams, president and CEO of the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Jim Colbert, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Lander University; Dr. Matt Logan, president and CEO of Self Regional Healthcare; and Jessica Garcia, development officer for the Self Regional Healthcare Foundation.
The Medically Speaking series is designed to make complex health topics more accessible while encouraging proactive conversations between patients and providers. Organizers say the strong turnout reflects a growing community interest in heart health and preventive care.
Future sessions in the series will continue to highlight a range of medical topics relevant to the region, offering residents valuable opportunities to learn directly from healthcare specialists.
