It may be hard to believe, but this weekend we celebrate Memorial Day and launch the summer season. Is your wardrobe ready?

With all of the great sales happening this weekend, it’s time to start thinking about all of your summer wardrobe needs so you can shop with purpose. Here is a breakdown of some of the most common summer activities and the key pieces you need for each of them. Fortunately there is some overlap, so with the proper planning you can find looks that pull double and triple duty.

1.    Beach and pool days. After the hours spent searching for the perfect swimsuit, it’s tempting to layer it under playful cover-up that shows it off. While that’s great when it’s dry what are you going to do when it’s wet?

The key pieces anytime water is involved are two towels, a pair of sandals, and a cover-up or second outfit that you can slip on quickly and easily. Of course a bag to carry it all, along with your other essentials, is a must.

2.    Traveling. Whether it’s planes, trains or automobiles when we travel, the key is comfort. Easy slip-on shoes and soft fabrics you can disappear into are great, but you also want to look somewhat composed after sitting for hours and not like you just rolled out of bed.

Some key pieces would be a relaxed sweatshirt, a pair of joggers either in a fun print or texture, a scarf that can double as a pillow and a hat to cover any hair mishaps along the way.

3.    Outdoor and casual events. From backyard barbeques to street fairs or picnics with the family, these are classic all-American summer activities so go old-school Americana style.

Whether you are wearing shorts, a romper or sundress complement your look with a classic denim jacket. It’s rugged yet timeless and will make just about any look outdoor appropriate.

4.    Easy everyday wear. Whether you’re hitting shops or museums you need an outfit with some endurance to tackle the city. Plus it has to look stylish yet effortless at the same time.

Separates are perfect for the task. Whether it’s a full pleated skirt and crop top or Bermuda shorts and a linen sweater they both look great with your comfortable shoe of choice.

Along with the holiday celebrations this weekend there are going to be some great sales, so make sure you’re ready to capitalize and maximize all of them.
