Midlands Technical College Golf Classic sets record

November 28, 2023

The Midlands Technical College Foundation hosted its annual Golf Classic on November 6 and shattered another record for the amount raised. This year’s $100,000 in donations exceed the $75,000 and $50,000 raised in the previous two years. The Golf Classic raises scholarship money for veterans, current service members, and their families. More than 130 golfers took part in this year’s tournament.

Hood Construction, AVANTech, Merrill Lynch, Dominion Energy, Burr Forman, Founders Federal Credit Union, and Palmetto GBA, along with 35 other sponsors provided substantial financial support.

MTC Foundation Board Chair Jim Braun said, “It’s clear that the Midlands business community understands and appreciates the role MTC plays in job training and education that fuels economic vitality. We appreciate all of the sponsors who support training scholarships for our military community.”

Nancy McKinney, CEO of the MTC Foundation, added, “MTC Foundation board members played a major role in helping us achieve this fundraising milestone. We are grateful for their influence in the Midlands and beyond.”

“MTC is a staunch supporter of members of our armed forces and their families,” said President Dr. Ronald L. Rhames. “We are continuously recognized for our commitment to our service men and women.” Dr. Rhames went on to say, “While this is my last Golf Classic as president of MTC, I look forward to continuing to watch the amount raised increase, providing even more scholarships to those who have answered the call.”

Joining college and foundation leadership was S.C. National Guard Adjutant General Van McCarty and Command Sergeant Major Erick Ochs of the U.S. Army Training Center & Fort Jackson. Both spoke about the importance of the tournament and how they see firsthand how the scholarships are benefitting service members and their families.

Each year, scholarships from the Golf Classic help service members and their families become work-ready through MTC’s QuickJobs program. The program gives students the training they need to succeed in high-demand jobs over the next decade.
