June 17, 2014COLUMBIA, SC – Midlands Technical College (MTC) president Dr. Marshall “Sonny” White, Jr., was among ten retiring college presidents/campus CEOs in the U.S. who were honored with the Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award from Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Awards are presented to retiring college presidents/campus CEOs at two-year or senior institutions and to state community college system directors who have provided consistently outstanding support to Phi Theta Kappa chapters and advisors during their careers. The awards are named in honor of the late Dr. Michael Bennett, longtime president of St. Petersburg College in Florida.
Kitty Spires, MTC Phi Theta Kappa advisor, was one of thirty advisors in the country and abroad to receive the Distinguished Advisor Award from Phi Theta Kappa.
The Distinguished Advisor Award recognizes advisors who have served at least four years and have made significant contributions to the growth of the individual chapter members, served as the chapter’s advocate on campus, and encouraged the chapter to be involved on the local, regional, and/or international level of the organization. Awardees were selected by a panel of judges from over 75 nominees worldwide.
The Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award and the Distinguished Advisor Award were presented by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society during their annual convention in Orlando, Florida, in April. At the convention, MTC’s Phi Theta Kappa chapter received 11 other awards recognizing the work of the students and advisors. These awards included but were not limited to: Phi Theta Kappa Distinguished Chapter Officer Team, Carolinas Region Super Stars, Carolinas Region Honors in Action Program, Carolinas Region Service Project, Phi Theta Kappa Five Star Chapter Plan, and the Phi Theta Kappa Horizon Award to co-advisor Wendy Samuel.
