Mitsubishi Polyester Film expanding Greenville County operations

September 28, 2015

GREENVILLE, SC – The Greenville Area Development Corporation (GADC), the County-chartered organization tasked with advancing the area’s economic growth, announced today that Mitsubishi Polyester Film, one of the world’s largest suppliers of polyester film, will undergo a $100-million expansion at its existing facility in Greer.

The plant, located at 2001 Hood Road, is the largest polyester film plant in the United States. It employs more than 500 workers and operates a total of 11 production lines. The upgrade plans call for Mitsubishi to replace two of its current production lines with upgraded equipment. The advanced technology will empower the plant to manufacture a higher quality product at a quicker pace. The project is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2017.

“It is great to see Mitsubishi make a commitment that will solidify the longevity of this facility,” said GADC President and CEO Mark Farris. “But even more important is the types of jobs this expansion will bring to Greenville County. Advanced manufacturing is a critical component to many organizations’ operations, and we’ve been working hard to make sure that Greenville County residents that have desire to work in this field are prepared with the necessary education and skills. Mitsubishi’s decision to expand here in Greenville County confirms we’ve got a workforce that can deliver.”

An Americas’ affiliate of the Japan-based Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc., Mitsubishi Polyester Film was established in 1964 with the opening of its Greer facility. Celebrating its 50th anniversary last year, the facility has grown its footprint from 95,000 square feet upon its inception to nearly one million square feet today.

“Mitsubishi Polyester Film is the perfect example of a working partnership between an organization and the community,” said Greenville County Council Chairman Dr. Bob Taylor. “We pride ourselves on our ability to engage in these mutually beneficial partnerships and Mitsubishi’s continued commitment to Greenville County demonstrates we are operating with a successful formula.”

“The competition for these manufacturing jobs is fierce,” said GADC Chairman Dick Wilkerson. “While new companies generate headlines, I’m proud of the diligent work that’s taken place behind the scenes to ensure we maintain positive, tenured relationships with the companies that have made a commitment to Greenville County through the years.”
