Moore & Van Allen counsel named to inaugural Lawyers Weekly Hall of Fame
November 8, 2018Moore & Van Allen PLLC (MVA) is pleased to announce that Charleston Counsel William (Sam) E. Applegate, III has been named to the South Carolina Lawyers Weekly inaugural Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame class of 2018 was formally recognized during an awards ceremony on November 6. Applegate’s feature Hall of Fame profile can be seen here.
The South Carolina Lawyers Weekly Hall of Fame program was established to honor some of South Carolina’s most significant lawyers ages 60 and older based on their career accomplishments, contributions to the profession, contributions to the development of the law, contributions to the bar and the state of South Carolina, and efforts to increase access to justice.
“Sam is a respected leader and inspiration across the state of South Carolina,” said Charleston Managing Member H. Manning Unger. “He is incredibly deserving of this fine distinction, and we are excited to celebrate his career of monumental achievements.”
Applegate practices in the areas of corporate, commercial real estate, health care and environmental law. Within his areas of focus, he primarily assists commercial real estate developers, corporations and other business entities with their legal and regulatory matters. In 1987, Applegate helped to launch the first statewide law firm by combining three previously independent firms in Charleston, Columbia, and Greenville, South Carolina into Haynsworth, Marion, McKay & Guerard. He joined MVA in 1997, helping the firm to launch and then leading its Charleston office as a managing member.
In addition to Applegate’s career in private practice, he has served as member of the House of Representatives and the State Senate of South Carolina; as chairman of the Department of Health and Environmental Control for the State of South Carolina, which is the state’s largest agency; and as municipal judge for the City of Folly Beach, South Carolina. He was also named the 2019 Best Lawyers Charleston Corporate Law “Lawyer of the Year” and holds a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Rating. He formerly earned South Carolina’s highest civilian honor – the Order of the Palmetto – for his outstanding lifetime achievements and community contributions within the state. Applegate is a member of the Charleston County Bar Association and South Carolina Bar Association.
