More Must-Read Books for 2016: What we can learn from the 5th Century

Success principles hold true over the centuries.
We can learn to win from a man dead all these years.
What worked in ancient China will work today.
Here are three more books to help you this year.

• The Art of War by Sun Tzu
Chinese Gen. Sun Tzu’s battle-tested strategies have been teaching leadership since the 5th century B.C.
Napoleon, MacArthur and Bill Belichick say they drew inspiration from this ancient military manual. Each of its 13 sections is dedicated to different aspects of strategy, goal setting and achievement.
His premise: Plan and act swiftly and appropriately to any situation that might arise.
In your discussions with your team, you will be able to translate battle strategy to business goals and sales.

• Lead Like Jesus: Lessons from the Greatest Leadership Role Model of All Time by Ken Blanchard
Blanchard is one of my favorite writers.
He credits his own leadership writing and teaching to what Jesus did as recorded in the Gospels.
He is the greatest leadership role model of all, he says.
In this book, he shows you:
• The principles of how to lead like Jesus.
• How to align your heart and head with your habits.
I also recommend anything Ken has published.
These include “The One Minute Leader.”

• The Starbucks Experience: 5 Principles to Turn Ordinary Into Extraordinary by Joseph Michelli The genius of Starbucks’ success lies in energizing your partners to deliver great personal experiences.
Michelli details the people-driven philosophy that made Starbucks one of the most admired companies.
Michelli reveals how you can follow the Starbucks model to create great experiences for your clients.
I also recommend his “When Fish Fly: Lessons for Creating a Vital and Energized Workplace.”
