More than 1,000 attend local classic car and art shows

August 31, 2016

More than 1,000 people gathered at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church’s fifth annual free classic car and art show on August 13, 2016, marveling at the sight of more than 300 classic cars dating 1930 from 1989. Inside, guests viewed works from more than 30 local artists in a wide range of mediums, and consumed roughly 1,200 hot dogs served in the church’s Great Hall.

Outside, in a first for the yearly event, local Irmo firefighters brought their truck and demonstrated firefighting techniques, including a trial run to a fire with lights blazing and sirens blaring. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department also attended, bringing police dogs to demonstrate how the animals protect officers and assist in apprehending criminals. Children’s activities such as snow cones and a bouncy house were also offered outdoors.

“Many people ask us why we do this every year and do not charge to participate,” commented St. Andrews Presbyterian Church’s Senior Pastor Dale Welden. “Simply put, it is our loving gift to the community, where we hope both visitors and members come together and have fun at the many activities we provide.”

The classic car show’s Best in Show trophy was awarded to Dan Bucklin for his red 1957 Cadillac convertible. The show’s other winners included: Ed Keschinger (1955 Ford Crown Victoria); Mike Jenkins (1968 Pontiac Firebird); Bruce Edge (1956 Porsche 356A); Ron Platt (1959 MGA;) Crystal Jacobs (1969 Ford Mustang); Tony Banks (1961 Chevrolet Corvette); Mike Lavigne (1966 Dodge Charger); Rickey Bowle (1930 Ford Model A); Dalton Fulmer (1963 Chevrolet truck); and Bubba Aumbertson (1965 Plymouth Satellite).

The car and art show was co-sponsored by the New Irmo News, DuBose Fitness Center, Columbia Conference Center, and DuBose Web Group.
