Nelson Mullins Elects Six Attorneys to Partnership, Two Attorneys to Of Counsel in Columbia

COLUMBIA, SC  – The partners of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough LLP have elected Columbia attorneys Heyward D. Bonyata, Gary L. Capps, Sally H. Caver, Lucile H. Cohen, Steven McFarland, and Carmen Harper Thomas to the partnership. They were each former associate attorneys. The partners also have promoted Columbia attorneys Michael J. Anzelmo and Kristen E. Horne to of counsel. Both were former associate attorneys. All the attorneys joined the Firm in 2007.

Ms. Bonyata focuses her practice in the areas of electronic discovery, information management, and pharmaceutical and medical device litigation. She counsels clients on a variety of electronic discovery and information management issues, including the development of strategies for preservation, collection, review, and production of electronically stored information; negotiation of court protocols and matter-specific discovery parameters; implementation of enterprise-level electronic discovery technology; and policy and procedure development for the handling of non-traditional data sources.

Capps_Gary.

Mr. Capps focuses his practice in the areas of healthcare, corporate law, and taxation. He represents healthcare clients in a wide range of regulatory, transactional, licensing, and operational matters. He also has experience with mergers and acquisitions, entity selection and formation, corporate governance issues, and other general corporate matters. He frequently advises clients in federal and state tax planning matters and concentrates his tax practice in the area of tax-exempt organizations.

Ms. Caver focuses her practice in the areas of corporate and securities law with an emphasis on mergers and acquisitions, corporation formation and governance, and general contract matters. She has experience representing buyers and sellers in business transactions, including stock sales, assets sales, and mergers. She also has outside general counsel experience, including advising on ownership and shareholder issues and corporate governance.

Ms. Cohen focuses her practice in the areas of electronic discovery, information management, pharmaceutical and medical device litigation, and toxic torts. She also advises clients on records and information management policies, processes, and implementation.

McFarland_Stephen.

Mr. McFarland focuses his practice in the areas of business litigation and franchise and distribution litigation. He has worked on business, franchise, and distribution matters for clients in a range of industries, including the banking, hotel, industrial coatings, and manufactured home industries. He also has experience handling matters in the area of automobile franchise litigation, including cases for motor vehicle, motorcycle, off-road vehicle, and heavy truck manufacturers arising from add points, relocations, terminations, warranty and incentive payments, allocations, and other aspects of the manufacturer-dealer relationship.

Ms. Thomas focuses her practice in the area of business litigation with an emphasis on financial services. She also has experience representing businesses in employment matters. She defends entities in cases regarding the practice of law, including the intersection of law and technology; defends businesses in class actions; negotiates and represents clients with disputes involving the public sector, including state agencies; and assists clients in resolving disputes regarding utility rates and other energy issues.

Mr. Anzelmo focuses his practice in the areas of appellate, business litigation, consumer finance litigation, tort litigation, and insurance defense. He has briefed and argued cases before the S.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. He also has directed and participated in motions practice before the S.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals. He has briefed and argued cases on behalf of indigent defendants in conjunction with the South Carolina Office of Appellate Defense.

Horne_Kristen.

Ms. Horne practices in the areas of business litigation, insurance coverage and bad faith claims, securities litigation and FINRA arbitration, and regulatory investigations and enforcement actions before FINRA, the SEC, and state securities regulators. She has experience representing life, health, and disability insurance companies including defending bad faith claims, asserting rescission claims based on material misrepresentations, and bringing numerous interpleader actions in both federal and state courts.  She also has experience representing broker dealers, registered investment advisors, and banks in securities regulatory defense and in customer and industry claims.
